Our society values independence highly, yet we all know that chronic illnesses can erode our ability to live independently.  We are fortunate to reside in Oregon, a state that is very progressive in its structure of long-term care services to seniors and one that allows many care options.  The following is a brief description of care choices that are available. Retirement Communities Retirement communities are for active adults.  The units are usually apartment type settings, which allow the individual to remain independent.  Some retirement communities provide support services such as meals, housekeeping, transportation, and recreational and social programs. Adult Foster Home Adult Foster Home (AFH) services are usually in homes located in residential neighborhoods and service five (5) or fewer residents.  Services include room and board and physical care – 24 hours a day. Assisted Living Facilities Assisted Living Facilities (ALF’s) are congregate living center that provide supportive care and supervision.  Residents have their own apartments with kitchenettes, and complete, private and handicap accessible bathrooms.  Residents must generally be in stable medical condition. Residential Care Facilities Residential Care Facilities (RCF’s) are living centers that provide supportive care and supervision such as meals, laundry, bathing and personal care with 24-hour supervision.  RCF’s serve residents with varying types of personal care needs and generally provide medication administration.  They may provide other routing nursing and services to help manage behavioral symptoms. Resident accommodations vary from individual units with private bathrooms to semi-private rooms with shared bathrooms.
